My letter to the Howick Historical Village

Panmure Bridge School
Kings Road
Panmure

Thursday 11 July

Dear Howick Historical Village

Thank you so much for having us, we have had a fun time. I have learnt so much about school in the past. Once we got there I was excited to see what you had in mind for us. My favourite part of this trip was when we got to play with the activities outside. My favourite activity I liked was when we got the two sticks that look like swords with the ring and we had to throw it to the other person and we had to catch it with the two sticks. The other activity I liked was stilts, even though it was hard I still managed to do it, but I practise with the beginner ones first.

I also liked it when we got to the Pakuranga School house and we got to play with the toys, I had a fun time with all the toys. One of my favourite was the Jacobs Ladder, It was so cool to see the people going down the ladder so fast. The other toy I liked was the men on the string, I went on that one the most and when we had competitions I won most of them because I got to know how the toy works. I also learnt that back in the 1800 plastic wasn't invented so they used wood, glass, string, ribbon, and they used cardboard for the people.

Thank you for showing us what it was like back then in schools. Once I saw what it was like I started to get a little bit scared. Thank you Mrs White, for teaching me about the British Isles and about Queen Victoria. From that I have learnt that Queen Victoria married her cousin Prince Albert. I also learnt about pennies, farthings, shillings and pounds. Even though it was a bit scary I still learnt a lot. Also when we got to the school house we got told that the ladies walked with their hands tucking each other, and the boys had to walk straight and with their hands on their sides, and that it is always ladies before gentlemen.

When I was going around the village I learnt so much like back then the Maori used wooden frames to dry eels. Also I learnt that back then when they were ironing their clothes they used metal for ironing. Also with the other iron it has it’s own chimney because with that iron you put some wood in the iron and they smoke will come. Also with the other iron it has a handle where you take it off because with some irons you put it in the fire to heat up then by the time it is hot you have to take it out and you have to hold it by the handle that is hot so there is a handle that is made out of wood and since wood doesn't get hot you can hold it by the handle and your hand won’t burn. So that's all the things I enjoyed about the trip and all the things I have learnt. Thank you again for having us and we hope we would get to come another day with more people and more parents to help. Thank you.

Yours sincerely,
Isabella

My research on Friedrich Hundertwasser

Hundertwasser - Research

L.I. - Research an artist
Be able to discuss characteristics of his work
Use black PVA and dye to recreate a Hundertwasser village

Who was Friedrich Hundertwasser and tell me three things about him as a person?
  1. He was born in Vienna, Austria in 1928
  2. He is one of the most important artist and architect during the 20 century
  3. Friedrich Hundertwasser died on February 19, 2000 in N.Z

What subject did he mostly draw/paint?
- He drew what people might do e.g live, wear. He would draw things in his dream, he designs or paints anything.

Name 3 characteristics of his work.
The 3 things that he paints or design are:
  1. Something to do with people and what they do in their life
  2. He always puts windows
  3. He makes it different shapes and sizes also different colours.

Paste a photo of one of his work
List 6 things you like about it

I like this building because:

It is colourful and big
It is very tall
It is different shapes
It has plenty of space to fit enough people
It is beautiful
It has a lot of windows so there would be plenty of sun.

Week 9 library skills

How the contents can help

L.I. - Library/Research skills
How to use the contents page to research effectively

The table of contents lists the chapters and other main parts of the book.  It is helpful because it gives you a general idea about the book so you know which chapters apply to your research.  Below is an example from a book about the moon.

Table of Contents

Introduction                                                                                                                                                       1
Chapter 1      The size of the moon in relation to the earth ✔                                                           5
Chapter 2      How the moon influences Earth’s tides ✔                                                                      17
Chapter 3      Full, half, and quarter moons    ✔                                                                                      31
Chapter 4      The lunar landscape: craters, mountain ranges, plains and faults   ✔             45
Chapter 5      The maria of the moon  ✔                                                                                                     57
Chapter 6      Theories about the origins of the moon  ✔                                                                  69
Chapter 7       Lunar geology     ✔                                                                                                                  77
Chapter 8       The moon and the age of the telescope                                                                   89
Chapter 9       Spacecraft and their impact on our knowledge of the moon                        103
Chapter 10     The Apollo programme                                                                                                    119
Index                                                                                                                                                                   135

Before you start highlight 4 words you don’t know and look them up in the dictionary.

Origins:A person's social background or ancestry.
Geology: The science that deals with the earth's physical structure and substance, its history, and the processes that act on it.

Answer these questions from the contents page above:

Which two chapters will have the most information about human beings travelling to the moon?
Chapter 9, 10

Which three chapters will tell you about aspects of the moon in relation to the earth?
Chapter 1,8,9

Which three chapters will tell you things about the surface of the moon?

Week 10 library task

A helping hand from the Glossary

L.I. - Library/Research skills
Using a glossary

Sometimes a book also has a glossary at the beginning or the end.  This gives short explanations of specialised or difficult terms used in the book.  The following is an example is from a book about the moon.

GLOSSARY

Albedo

Asteroid

Mare

Satellite

Sputnik 1

in astronomy, the reflective property of planets
a small rocky object found mainly in a belt or flat ring between the orbits of Jupiter and Mars; also called a minor planet because it is so small (the largest are only 200 km across).
a large flat plain on the moon caused by lava flows and marked by ridges, depressions and faults; all 14 maria are on the side of the moon that faces Earth.
a natural (e.g. moon) or artificial (e.g. spacecraft) object that orbits around a larger astronomical body.
the first artificial satellite, which was launched into space to orbit around the Earth in 1957.

Name an artificial satellite. Spacecraft

What is another term for a minor planet in orbit between Mars and Jupiter?
Asteroid

What is the term for an object that orbits around another larger planetary body?
Satellite

What is the term used for a large flat lava flow on the moon?
Mare

What term is used to describe the characteristic light reflecting from a planet?

Albedo

Scale drawing assesment

Scale Drawing assessment

1 thing I found easy was drawing up the grid and making the lines straight

1 thing I found hard was placing the information in the same boxes

I like how the final design looks like the original design because I made the petals the same size.

Next time I would take my time and make sure the boxes are the same and even.

Term 2 review

Term 2 review

I have learnt in reading how to look for the key ideas. I have also learnt how to make inferences and what it means.

I have learnt in writing how to write a persuasive speech and thats why I went into the finals.

I have learnt in speeches that I need an expert and a hook in the beginning also a good conclusion to leave the audience something to think about.

I have learnt in maths what number comes before and after when it comes to big numbers in the thousands and millions, also I have learnt how to say a number that has a space in between

I have learnt in maths how to enlarge a picture and to put the right information in the right boxes

I have learnt in topic what schools are like past, present and also future and especially what it was like back in the olden days. One thing I learnt from that was that if you were naughty then you would get whacked by the cane or you would have to wear the dunce’s cap.

Something else I learnt was how to redesign a classroom. Also I have learnt how to do a LOGO with the alphabet.

My Persuasive writing

Uniforms

Do you get mud on your uniform? Well one way to solve it is to STOP Wearing UNIFORM.

One thing that students hate is waking up in the morning and getting changed into the same clothes that they are going to wear everyday of the week. Sometimes you might even lose your uniform and your parents have to buy you a new uniform, they nearly spend over fifty dollars just on you and your uniform, and that’s just a waste of money.

Some students love playing sport but when they forget to bring a spare change of clothes then they will get their uniform dirty. sixty percent of people say that we shouldn't wear uniform and forty percent of people say that we should. We should wear uniform for special occasions or for when we go on school trips only.

Some students don’t  like the fact that everyone in their school looks the same, and that they want to look different to everybody else. Also some students say that when their parents use to go to school they got to pick what they got to wear. Some of them say that their uniform is ugly. Students want to wear their clothes to school because some of them get clothes for presents and they don’t get to wear it.

Also they say that it should be banned.  I think that we shouldn't wear uniform because my grandparents do our washing and all they see is my uniform. Sometimes students get holes in their uniform. Also I have asked people in the class and some of them say we shouldn't wear uniform, and the other people say that we should wear uniform so that we can represent our school. So if we talk to someone about our uniform then we might get to wear whatever we want.

I believe that wearing uniform is a bad idea because when I go home I’m just too tired to go get changed and I feel like just going to sleep. So wearing uniform is a bad idea.
