This is my xtramaths result. I am nearly finished and I hope I will move on to division very soon.

My Worst Mistake

My Worst Mistake

My worst mistake was when I told a lie to my mum and nana. She gave me money to give to my nana because she was going to buy dinner, and then when I went with her to buy dinner I ended up spending it on myself. We were out the door of the house and I was about to give the money.

We were on the way to buy dinner and then when I saw something I wanted, so I told my nana that my mum didn’t give any money. When my nana found out she got angry, and she was taking her anger out on strangers. My nana was saying “I asked your mum for money to help out with dinner, how come she didn’t give any money”?  We had finished buying dinner but my nana was still angry.

When we finished buying dinner we went to the shop to buy drinks.  I was suppose to use the money my mum gave to buy the drinks, but instead I bought something for myself and when my nana was at the other side of the shops, I quickly paid for my own can. After I had finished drinking my can I went to throw it in the bin and that was when my nana caught me and I had to tell her the truth.

When I told her the truth, I felt really bad, also I knew that she was going to tell my mum.  We finally got home my nana told my mum, and my mum got angry at my nana because she had blamed her for giving no money, then she was really disappointed at me.

My worst mistake was when I told a lie to my mum and nana. She gave me money to give to my nana because she was going to buy dinner, and then when I went with her to buy dinner I ended up spending it on myself. I felt really bad and I know now to tell the truth.

Title - Short and Scary Stories
Editor - Karen Tayleur

Short and scary stories is a big book with short stories in it, the story I read was called Haunted.

Activity you did:

When we were at Waiheke we got a bit bored so my aunt's friend took us on a walk to the beach. The house we stayed at, it had a view of the beach. On our way there we were following my cousin, and then we got lost, so we had to walk back to our house. It was really tiring because our house was at the top of the hill. We still had a fun time at Waiheke Island.

Food Explanation

Weddings

My family always goes big when it comes to weddings. At the wedding we always have some traditional food. Sometimes the people getting married would allow children at their wedding. We always make sure that the food is out to the people in time, so that there are no complaints. Some of the food we have at weddings are traditional tongan foods like pig, roast lamb, roast pork, we also have otai (Fruit Drink).

Whenever we have a wedding my family always makes sure that we have otai. I like the way my nana makes it, because she adds in mango, pineapple, watermelon. She makes it in a big container, so that there would be enough for everyone. A lot of people always love my nana’s otai. One of the other traditional foods we have is, puaka (Pig).

Pig is a traditional food we have at special events. My dad, grandpa, uncle, and some family friends, always cook the pig by hand. Whenever we have a big wedding, everyone asks “Where is the pig?”, it is that important. While people are getting their food, there is always someone cutting the pig at the same time. Sometimes when the children are allowed at the wedding they have food that the little kids can eat.

Since children are allowed at the wedding, there would always be food that little kids can eat. They would say “Kids that are 12 and over, pass as an adult, and if you are under that you are a kid”. Some of the foods they have are, Chop Suey, Chinese Food, Finger Food, and things like that. They love having kids over, but sometimes they only allow the family kids.

My Family always makes sure that every wedding we go to or host is the best wedding that anyone has been to. These are some of the foods that we always have at a wedding. My Favourite is the Otai. My Family always goes big when it comes to our family weddings.

Isabella - My Favourite Movie

Dawn of the planet of the apes

Have you ever seen apes riding horses? Well in their world they rule everyone around them. These apes are very special, they look like humans, they act like humans, and believe it or not, they can talk.

I couldn’t believe they could talk. The leader of the apes is Caesar, he is the strongest out of all of them. He can talk to humans but when they talk to each other they do sign language. They can speak very clearly and they can understand humans. They also look like humans because on their mouth it looks like someones hand print. This is a good movie because it is rated 13+ and if you like a movie that is science fiction, thriller, drama, and action film then this would be a very good and they bring the movie alive with all the drama.

My favourite character was Maurice he isn’t the the main character, but he shows in most parts of the movie. He is different because he is an orangutan and the others are apes. In one of the scenes he is in trapped in a cage by Koba, he breaks through the cage and helps saves the day.  Also the other characters are Caeser (the leader), Koba (bad ape), Ash (son of Caesar), they are the main apes and the humans are Malcolm, Ellie, and Alexander they are the only humans that help the apes. They make this movie one of the best.

That is why my favourite movie is ‘Dawn of the planet of the Apes’. I have watched other movies and this one was the best one. I thought that the producers of this movie, made it more attractive with apes, humans, war, life and family. I hope that there will be another part for this movie.

Netball Explanation

Netball

Have you ever wanted to be a professional netball player? Do you want to be part of the silver ferns? Well netball is a fun and energetic sport. You would have to know all the rules, and all the positions. Once you start playing you wouldn’t want to stop. Some of the famous netball people are Maria Tutaia, Catherine Latu, they are both part of the Silver Ferns.

The Silver Ferns is the New Zealand team. My favourite player is Maria Tutaia because I play the same position as her. She plays Goal Shoot and I play Goal Shoot. Whenever they have a home game my mum would always get tickets and we would go and watch the silver ferns. Maria won a gold medal at the Commonwealth games in 2006 and another in 2010. Another player that I like is Catherine Latu. She is really good at Goal Shoot, she practises her shooting a lot. She has had 50 test caps, 20 for Silver Ferns and 30 for Samoa. These ladies play really well because they know the rules for their positions.

The rules for netball are simple. The court is divided into 3 thirds. If you are GS or GK you would have to stay in one third of the court. Or if you are GA, GD, WA, or WD you are allowed in two thirds of the court. The only position that is allowed all over the court is Center, but they can’t go in the circle. Also if you have the ball, you can’t run with it, also you have to be careful with your feet because the umpires will pull you over if you step with the ball. They will also pull you over if you contact your partner. Contact is when you are too close to your partner or when you push them. You would have to be 3 feet away from the person. Also your positions are very important too.

You would need to know everything about your position or the umpire will pull you over. My position is GS so I am only allowed in one third of the court. My partner would be the GK, he or she would have to try and defend against me while I try and shoot. My job is very important because when I shoot it will give my team points. Another position is center, I don’t really like center because they have to run around the whole court for 4 quarters. If you are only allowed in 1 third, you stop at the first yellow line, if you cross that you are offside. Netball is a easy sport that you can learn very fast.

Netball is a energetic sport. If you follow these rules then you might end up in the Silver Ferns. I really like playing netball because I was brought up with netball. Also I play GS, and I really like that position. All you need to know are the rules and the positions. I learnt by watching Maria Tutaia shoot for the Silver Ferns.

Poem - Telling Where

At the beach:

Strolling along the beach, hearing the waves
about to come crashing on their feet.
Feeling the breeze coming from the tall trees.

Independent Writing

'I remember it like it was yesterday'
Using this sentence I had to write about an important and meaningful experience in my life

I remember it like it was yesterday when we had prizegiving and they were announcing the new head students for 2014. Our Deputy Principal was on stage announcing the new head girl, I remember she said “Our head girl for 2014 is Isabella”, at that moment I was feeling really proud and on the inside I was feeling mixed emotions. When I was on stage I could see my mum and dad, they looked very proud of me. I went home and once my whole family found out, they were very happy for me.

Storylines
On Monday we had some people come in and they performed a show called ‘Space Jump’. The actors name were Tai and Naomi. The show was about an alien girl who has a mission, her mission was to come to earth and find out information about books. When she came to earth she met a school boy who knew a lot about books. He told her that if you want to be really interested in a book who need to read with imagination and you can use creativity, so that you can really enjoy reading your book. We learnt a lot about reading and all sorts of things you can explorer while you read a book.

Hexagon Art

This is my hexagon art. I used a protractor and a compass to create my hexagon. I also used pastel to colour my hexagon. The thing I like best is how it looks curvy and I like it how the colours are very bright. If I could change one thing I would change the pattern because I found it a bit hard to rule the lines, but once I started to colour then it turned out right.

How to Play Scrabble

How to Play Scrabble

To play scrabble you need to partner up with someone. Your pair needs to pick out 1 letter out from the bag, then the other players do the same. To know who goes first you have to organise the letters from alphabetical order. Then once you know the order, you then pick out 6 other letters. This game can help with learning new words, also it can help you come up with a word using letters that are given to you.

The first pair has to come up with a word using their 7 letters. Once they have done that it gets placed on the board. On the board there are squares which say double word or letter score, triple word or letter score. Then the other players do the same. While you're placing your words you have to think about them and see where they go. The first pair goes first and whatever word they choose e.g ‘fish’ then the other pairs have to make a word using the letters from ‘fish’.

On the tiles there are numbers that you count to get a score. You need to be smart about your letters because if you make a word using q or z you easily get 10 points. Also if you use all your 7 letters you get 50 points. In the bag there are some blank tiles, these tiles can make up for any letter in any word but it is worth nothing. In the bag there are a lot of vowels.

All the words you come up with, have to be English words. You are not allowed to use proper nouns. Also if someone makes a word and you can place a ‘s’ at the end, but if you can also make another word, you can add up their points with the words you have made.

At the end of the game each of the players have to calculate their score. The person with the highest score wins. Scrabble uses a lot thinking because you need to come up with words. Also it can be tricky because you have to use the letters that the other players have put on the board.

Recipe

Ingredients
  • 2 cups of flour
  • 4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbs sugar
  • 1/8 tsp cinnamon
  • 3/4 tsp vanilla
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted*
  • 1 1/2 - 2 cups water

Directions
1
Combine flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and sugar into a medium sized bowl.
Stir dry ingredients with a fork or spoon.

2
Add in the vanilla extract and the melted butter.

3
Add in the water to the batter until the batter is the right consistency. I add in 1 1/2 cups first and then gradually add a bit more as needed. Not too thin or not too thick.

4
Now is the time to add in any of the extras your kids like.
I add in berries and bananas as the final step. When you add in blueberries and/or bananas be sure to only stir slightly.

5
Finally spoon the batter onto a heated griddle. Have fun making those pancakes!

Statistical Investigation

This is my graph about Room 6's favourite league team. Tatiana and I had to go around the class and see which team they liked supporting. The most liked team was the Brisbane Broncos. The least teams were the Roosters and the Rabbitohs, with the total of 1. The warriors and other teams were the same with the total of 5. This was a fun activity because we got to see which team our classmates liked the most.

That was summer

Have you ever tasted summer?
Sure you have.
Remember when the heated popcorn crunches in your mouth
or eating that freezing ice - cream
and dipping it into the popcorn
because it was that pleasant?
Remember the hot, buttery smell of your popcorn?
That was summer.

Have you ever smelled summer?
Sure you have.
Remember the time when you could smell the delicious sizzling food
or even just staring at the jumbo size cake
because you wanted a slice so badly
or maybe it’s because it was chocolate?
Remember the moisture of the cake?
That was summer.

Have you ever touched summer?
Sure you have.
Remember the time you saw your favourite outfit
and you wanted it soo badly
but you couldn’t because your mum said you only have a budget of $20
but instead you bought your favourite pair of shoes?
Remember when you would go home peaceful because you got what you wanted?
That was summer.

Have you ever touched summer?
Sure you have.
Remember the time when you went
to the beach you could feel the soft sand,
and you saw seaweed floating in the water
also you could feel the shells every time you step on one?
Remember when you went to jump in the water and it made you playful?

That was summer.
